About the author
Dr. Warren Clark
Warren grew up near St. Augustine, Florida where he loved visiting the Ripley's Museum. In the 1990s he hit on creating single panel cartoons to tell Florida's history which appeared in 50 newspapers. In 30 seconds he wanted readers to say, Wow! I didn't know that! Warren also wanted them to know where they could go see it for themselves. He asked Florida historians to fact-check the illustrations. Warren is a community organizer working collaboratively for the common good.

Testimonials for History Illustrations
The earliest History Illustrations ran as the Lewis and Clark’s Explorations of La Florida in over 50 newspapers with a combined circulation of nearly a half million readers in the 1990s. Below are quotes about this publication.
“The variety of information presented in each piece would surely have lured the original Lewis and Clark exploration team to the Sunshine State. Clark’s goal is to help readers develop an appreciation of the different people whose histories have contributed to Florida’s rich cultural mix. 'Perhaps by understanding one another’s stories, we may become a bit more tolerant of our differences', Clark explains."
–Teresa Eubanks, Editor, The Calhoun Liberty-Journal, September 6, 1992
“I hope our readers will look forward to learning about their state through this weekly cartoon. It’s entertaining as well as informative. A perfect addition to our On the Go magazine.”
–Diane Howe, Entertainment Editor, Ocala Star Banner, March 27, 1992

Additional Accolades
- The St. Augustine City Commission presented four History Illustrations on tiles to its sister city, Aviles, Spain, during a formal visit in 2014.
- In 2015, the Florida Humanities Council hosted 15 illustrations on their Teaching Florida History web site for use in classrooms statewide.
- At City Commission meetings during public comment in 2014-15 leading up to the 450th Anniversary Warren Clark presented illustrations that told a story about compassion in St. Augustine’s history.
- From 2012 to 2016, the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra and the Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau commissioned 10 illustrations per year. Many of these appeared as commemorative posters in stores, doctors’ offices, government waiting rooms, and restaurants during the 450th Anniversary of St. Augustine in 2015.
- In 2014, 8 of 17 rabbis returned to St. Augustine on the 50th Anniversary of their arrest for civil rights actions in St. Augustine. The illustration, “The Largest Mass-Arrest of Jewish Rabbis in U.S. History”, pictures them in a sweltering jail cell that night writing as a group, “Why We Came”. The illustration was the prominent visual depiction of the anniversary events.
- In 2015, Johnson and Johnson purchased 33 large illustrated tiles depicting African-American history in St. Augustine and Florida for placement in their corporate conference rooms.
In the 1980s Warren Clark took his children, Jessica and Nathaniel, on camping explorations across Florida. They discovered fascinating stories and met interesting people glad to share their history. Warren worked with fellow illustrators, Bob Lewis and Richard Gamache, so readers of fifty Florida newspapers could enjoy “Lewis and Clark’s Explorations of La Florida”. He wanted people to say, “Wow, I didn’t know that!” And he wanted them to know where they could go to see it for themselves. These booklets are the result of four decades of exploration, research and historical illustration in collaboration with professional Florida historians.
